Why should you start a blog?

There are so many reasons why starting a blog today is a great idea. I could go on and on about this question alone but to spare you the misery, I will sum it up with the main reasons why I believe you should.

For one, it is inexpensive. In comparison to starting a brick and mortar business or a franchise, you’re paying pennies to begin your own personal blog. And I believe it is fair to assume that you likely already have a following on social media given the day and age we live in so blogging is a great way to take things to the next level.

Blogging is also a great way to make extra income. Or for some, a full-time income. If you’re looking for the perfect way to gain exposure or to gain credibility as an authority in your niche while earning an income, then blogging is a great way to do just that!

It is also flexible and you can do it from anywhere. And over 20% of millennial’s are now blogging. So it is becoming more and more popular. But it isn’t oversaturated because so many begin and quit prematurely. Or they aren’t doing it the right way so they are just spinning their wheels.

Deciding on your blog niche

This was a huge struggle for me. I felt like my niche had to be profound and everything had to be perfect before I could even begin. But I am here to tell you, that that’s not the case at all. I mean, of course, you need to narrow down your niche so that you aren’t spreading yourself thin, and so that you can establish yourself as an authority. But you don’t have to see or know the entire picture for it to come together.

The best way to find your voice is to just begin. I really don’t want you to be like a deer in headlights like I was over analyzing every detail instead of just beginning.

So I want you to grab a piece of paper and write down these question’s and answer them honestly. By doing this activity, it will help you narrow down your blog’s niche. And I would encourage you to write down everything that comes to mind.

  1. What are your passions?
  2. What can you see yourself writing about easily for the next 5+ years that naturally incorporates into your lifestyle?
  3. What are your strengths or what is it that your friends are always complimenting you and telling you you’re good at?

Next, I want you to highlight or circle any of these things that are profitable needs. And take it a step further and break your answers up into categories. Then see which passion seems to be the most dominant. (Maybe you find that you wrote several different things related to health or fitness, or arts and crafts, or budgeting, etc.) by categorizing your answers, you can better determine which one you’re most passionate about.

Pro tip: If it helps to solve a problem, it is profitable.

How to decide on a blog domain name

Woohoo! Now the exciting part! But, this is also something so people many struggles with. So here are some helpful tips to help you pick your perfect domain name (AKA website name.)
First thing I suggest is that you make sure the domain that you choose is memorable. And you can choose to either keep your domain name broad or make it very targeted to your niche. Another thing you will want to make sure of is that the spelling is simple for others to remember.
You also have the option of making your domain name your personal name if it is available. At first, I didn’t go that route, in case if I ever decided to sell my website. But if that is something you don’t think you’ll ever be interested in doing, then that is definitely an option.
Another option is keeping keywords in your domain name for the sake of searching purposes when people search the web. If someone searches the web for something specific that is contained in your domain, it will help your site appear.
Get creative with this and don’t get stuck like so many people do! Your domain name is not going to hinder the success of your blog in the long run anyways, so just pick something and go with it.

Setting up your blog and choosing your host

Now we get into the technical side of choosing and setting up your host. The hosting company is what holds all of your blog’s files. There are many different hosting companies like BlueHost is a common one that you may have heard of.

But the host I have chosen is SiteGround. I chose SiteGround because after much review and comparison and from past experiences because I have found them to be the best from my personal experience. They have very little down time and their customer service is exceptional. They can be reached 24/7 if you ever need assistance or if you find yourself stuck on something!

Let’s get your website up!

This post contains affiliate links, which means, if you make a purchase through one of them I will receive a commission at no extra cost to you.

First step – go to SiteGround here. Then click ‘sign up’ and you will then be directed to the following page where you will select your plan. I started with the ‘GrowBig’ plan because it allows you to host multiple sites if you ever choose to. And you can always upgrade down the road if you need to but that plan is a great place to start!

Second step – you will select ‘register a new domain’ and this is the fun part where you get to register your website! You may find that some of your ideas are taken so play around with it for a bit until you find one that works!

Then review and complete your order. This step should look like this:

I suggest keeping Domain Privacy and SG Site Scanner selected as that protects you from your private information being shared and protects you from hackers.

Once you’ve submitted payment you will select ‘proceed to customer area’

Then select ‘Start a new website’ and select ‘WordPress’ and then fill out the info requested.

Next confirm and complete the setup!

Congratulations! You now have your very own WordPress website! Here is where you will log in to set up your theme, write your blog posts, etc! www.YourBlogName.com/wp-admin
